Abelard, Gesner
1922-

Gesner Abelard is a native of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, where he was born in 1922.  Without a market for his work until the arrival of the Dutchman, Dewitt Peters, and the subsequent founding of Le Centre d'Art in 1944, Abelard worked as a mechanic and detective for many years.  He first began his artistic career as a sculptor, studying with Ulberman Charles.

Abelard paints in the "Haive Tradition," a highly personal expression that reflects the artist's rejection of the "anonymity and isolation of a highly advanced technological state of human existence."

The artist's detailed and decorative works have been exhibited in galleries and museums in Europe, South America, and the United States.
